We met thru a mutual friend, Becky Park. I sat down first, saying hi to Becky and Joseph. A moment after I sat down, a guy sits down, one that I recognize but don't know. He is friendly and smiles at me, introducing himself as Alex. I say hi back. Class begins and the TA is immediately ranting about how we don't understand film and how we fail to see the point. But really she's just angry at how poor our papers looked. We never really got the point, at least failed to articulate it. I watch Alex as he draws a octopus with a smiling face on the desk. I flip through a journal and show him that I copied it in my sketchbook.

Later I found out that Alex used to draw these amazing octopi all over the shuttle buses. Strange to think I met his drawings long before I met the actual person. We continued to bump into each other for years, in class, at work, at parties, in my backyard. We grew to be good friends. It was the last year of college and I had recently moved into a studio apartment by myself. Alex called me one night to hang out. A movie night. I made curry and he brought over the "Squid and the Whale," his dvd player and a bag of salami.
And that is how we came to be. Through a movie night.
